Another WWDC goes by and Apple still has not put in one of the most requested features to their iPhone lineup: the MagSafe.

This mod builds from my previous mod of adding a MagSafe charging connector to my Galaxy Note 2:

I recently obtained a gold iPhone 5s and wanted this feature so I created my own mod!

    This mod used:
    • gold iPhone 5s
    • black OtterBox case
    • Qi wireless charging receiver
    • female MagSafe connector
    • male MagSafe connector
    • 5v 1a phone charger
I 3d printed an ABS faceplate for the charging port using an UP Plus 2 3d printer and created it using SolidWorks 2013.

I've also uploaded the .stl and solidworks file of the MagSafe faceplate to thingiverse below:

This mod does not void the warranty on my phone.

I chose the Qi wireless charging receiver because the ribbon cable was thin enough to not bulge and it was relatively easy to work with as the testing pins were accessible.

I thought the wiring was going to be easy but it was not. Turns out, you can't just cut the ribbon to only include the positive and negative. It requires a code to be sent to the iphone. Such a shame as I wasted a receiver.

So I took another board and soldered the positive right before it enters the circuit. This worked and output 5v 500ma!

Next I took apart the MagSafe port and removed the metal support, glued the 4 magnets together 'sandwiching' the 5 pin connector.

Realizing I did not have enough room for the chips on the Qi receiver, I cut only enough plastic from the OtterBox to accommodate it.

    What it looks like

Next I got onto my computer and made a faceplate for the MagSafe to sit in.

Superglued the MagSafe inside the faceplate and then superglued the faceplate to the front OtterBox inner shell

What it looks like with the outer rubber case on. Pretty nice!

Superglued the cut Qi receiver with it's components facing away from the phone so allow the phone to sit flush.

Wired the Qi receiver to the MagSafe connector
Here's how I wired the MagSafe:
    1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
    gnd 5v void 5v gnd

I took the MagSafe power adapter cord and soldered it to a 5v USB charger.

Let's try it out and see if it powers my phone!

    SUCCESS!
